Hey Vincent,

Many thanks for your visit. I believe SP server backup backs up the whole server and yes u can mount the backup as a virtual drive to recover a particular folder and stuff..

but StorageCraft have something called ShadowProtect Granular Recovery for Exchange which might be what u may be after http://3.ly/WPoy . Never had a chance to have a play with it though.

Could you please tell me if Shadow Protect is Exchange aware ? iow can you specifically recover Exchange only in case something goes wrong with the exchange information store ?

Hi, Thanks for your visit.

Ok just so that we are on the same page. You wish to move all the VM's under one esxi host to Hyper V R2.

Yes it is possible to boot off the CD from ShadowProtect and take a backup of all the vm's and have them moved to some kind of an external storage like NAS box or something.

So at this stage you will have a NAS box with backup images of all your vm's

Replace Esxi with Hyper V R2 and then restore these VM's via the same method of booting off the ShadowProtect CD and then using the restore option this time.

WARNING: Read about moving Esxi VM's to Hyper V they need a bit of a work before its moved.

Drawback:

Once your VM's are up and running, they wont be backed up and this is because the software is not installed on the server OS. You would need to back them up individually using cold backup.But this kills the purpose of backing up and restoring. Moreover I am sure you may be breaking licensing agreements as well.

For each of your VM's to be backed up u need each of them to have a single licensed instance of ShadowProtect installed on the OS level and not on the hyper Visor level.

Now if you are going to do Hyper V on top of a W2k8 server, yes what you said might be feasible but not recommended cause you will be taking a heavy hit on the servers since they are on top of an oS.

Thanks for the instructions. I have heard great things about the s/w. We are on a tight budget and run the free Esxi4 with a few VM's on md3000i and R905. We dont need vmotion but the backup option on free vmware is nonexistant. I was thinking of moving all our VM's to WM Server 08R2 and then use the server edition of shadow protect on that server. So basically we should be able to take the backup of the host server along with all the vm's using just 1 license.
Is this possible?
